Sauna

In the heart of the frigid Michigan winters, we at Russon Family Farms have found a new way to warm our hearts (and our bodies). Introducing our latest endeavor: a cozy, homegrown sauna, constructed using odds and ends from our very own barn!

Building a sauna might seem like a daunting task, but when you embrace a bit of creativity and resourcefulness, the possibilities become endless. We opted to utilize unused materials lying around the barn to give them a new purpose. From old wood to spare parts, every element found a place in the sauna’s construction, giving it a unique, rustic charm.

To maximize comfort and ensure a pleasant sauna experience, we opted for cedar benches. Purchased and perfectly sized for the interior, these benches provide a comfortable, resilient, and aromatic addition that enhances the entire sauna experience.

But, of course, what’s a sauna without heat? Instead of investing in a traditional, high-cost sauna heater, we repurposed our outside wood furnace. This furnace, which usually provides warmth to our house and heats our water heater, has been creatively modified to serve as the heating source for our sauna as well.

We added a bypass to the furnace to connect to an old radiator, a $20 “classic beauty” that we found, transforming it into the sauna’s primary heat source. This cost-effective solution provides efficient heat distribution, ensuring our sauna is always at the perfect temperature to enjoy.

The result? A brilliant, DIY, eco-friendly sauna that provides us with the perfect respite from the cold Michigan winter. Plus, the satisfaction of creating something with our own hands, using resources already available to us, has made every moment in this sauna even more rewarding.

So here we are, turning a frosty Michigan winter into an opportunity for warm relaxation and wellness, one sauna session at a time. This new addition to our farm is yet another example of how we can make the most of what we have around us with a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of enthusiasm.

Stay tuned for more updates from Russon Family Farms as we continue to innovate and adapt, turning everyday challenges into exciting opportunities!
