Farm Internship at Russon Family Farms
Introduction
Born from a desire to create a sanctuary against climate change and a commitment to the future of sustainable farming, Russon Family Farms is much more than an agricultural enterprise – it’s a symbol of resilience, regeneration, and hope.
Located in the heart of Michigan, 5 miles from the charming town of Clare, our farm spreads across 56 acres of fertile land, boasting a rich history and deep roots in Amish traditions. Today, the farm stands as a beacon of regenerative agriculture, committed to battling climate change and tackling food insecurity.
Description of Duties
We expect our intern to be able to work hard at whatever tasks are at hand. There will be planting, weeding, natural pest management, harvesting – typical market gardening activities. There is a small orchard, blueberries, with more plantings to come. We will establish a vineyard and initiate a CSA this year. Learning opportunities abound. And we have 4 chickens and 2 ducks to keep life interesting.
We are a Beta farm involved in a project where we take annual soil samples to determine the level of carbon sequestration at different depths in various locations around the farm. It is in cooperation with The Soil Inventory Project. https://thesoilinventoryproject.org/
We are constantly learning something new – what is that insect, fungus or plant? We expect that our intern will too. The farm is one big experiment (on a small scale). And we consciously consider how it takes shape through the lens of climate change.
